Performance Management

Performance appraisals are essential for the effective management and evaluation of staff. Appraisals help develop individuals, improve organisational performance, and support business planning. Formal appraisals are generally conducted annually for all staff in the organisation, with maybe an interim review at the half year point just to review any objectives set and see if any support is required. 
 Each staff member is normally appraised by their line manager. Directors are normally appraised by the CEO, who is appraised by the chairman or company owners, depending on the size and structure of the organisation.
Appraisals allow management to agree expectations and objectives, and delegate responsibilities and tasks. They should also establish individual training needs and support required and cover any topic the employee wants to raise. 
Appraisals are also essential for career and succession planning - for individuals, critical jobs, and for the organisation as a whole.
Appraisals are important for staff motivation, attitude and behaviour development, communicating and aligning individual and organisational aims, and for building relationships within the business.
Appraisals should provide a formal, recorded, regular review of an individual's performance, and a plan for future development.
They are most effective when regular conversations happen throughout the year, an appraisal shouldn’t be full of surprises for the employee, and it should be a discussion and summary of the overall performance.
